John Kapiris is now a three-time ANDRA Super Sedan champion following a runner up placing at the recent Fuchs Winternationals.

At the beginning of the weekend Kapiris may have been considered an outside shot to defend his previous two titles. Siting in fourth position, 40 points behind David Yanko and potentially eyeing up a Super Street championship, Kapiris watched on as third placed George Tipouikidis was eliminated in Round 2 followed by championship leader David Yanko and second placed Stephen Griffin in Round 1.

All three were eliminated at the tree by agonising red lights clearing the way for Kapiris to advance and claim a three-peat.

“I feel like a kid in a candy shop, I know it’s a big achievement and I am proud of it,” said Kapiris.

“Look, I knew it was going to be hard being a few rounds behind but my focus was made easy for me to get in the car, don’t give my opposition anything to play with, cut the light, run the dial in and hope everything around it falls into place.”

Winning three championships in a row might give the impression he has the wood over his rivals but Kapiris himself debunks that myth admitting this was the most difficult to win so far.

“I must say this was the hardest one to win, going rounds at the Winters is never easy. Plus being behind the eight ball and I had a lot of tough competitors to take on. The best round was (Round 3) against my good friend Neil Constantinou, father to Andrew Constantinou to win the championship.”

Competing on two fronts this past season, Kapiris came into the Fuchs Winternationals with a chance to double up with the Super Street championship within grasp. Unfortunately that wasn’t to be but he’ll continue the two-pronged attack next season.

“I will always run Super Sedan because it’s one of the hardest classes to race and most of the time the biggest fields. I ran a few meetings in Super Street in the past season and I will run Super Street in the next season too.

“I would like to say well done to all racers, all tracks and track staff, ANDRA and most important of all, our spectators. And thanks to all my sponsors, family and friends.”

Kapiris will pick up his title defence at the 2015 Desert Nationals at Alice Springs Inland Dragway for Round 1 of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series. For more information please click here.
