Following non-qualification in Round 1 at Perth Motorplex earlier this year, Steven Reed faced a challenge to get back into contention for the 2014 Top Alcohol ANDRA Drag Racing Series championship.

Thanks to successive B Final appearances in the Super 3 Extreme Drag Race three round format at Willowbank and an X-Champs victory in Sydney, Reed has climbed to third place in the standings, 48 points behind leader John Cannuli.

“To win the championship you need to have consistent semi-finals or finals appearances in the second half of the season without any non-qualifying efforts as we did in Perth this year,” explains Reed. “That put a huge dent in our chances this year.”

For now the focus is on the Fuchs Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway where the team welcomes ACDelco Batteries as a new corporate partner in a bid to repeat the Winternationals success of 2012.

“We are quietly confident of being able to run in the low to mid 5.50s at the Winternationals if we make the right calls on the tune-up for the track conditions. I don’t realistically think we are going to run in the 5.40s.”

“Every car entered for the event has a good shot of winning. Everyone has similar equipment and a lot of knobs to turn, you just have to turn the right ones at the right time!”

For the Reed clan, there is more than one set of “knobs to turn” as the Winternationals is a family affair with members scattered throughout the pits either racing or tuning or both.

“It’s pretty cool having son-in-law Matt Watts and daughter-in-law Fiona Reed racing in Supercharged Outlaws plus Daniel as crew chief for Stuart Bishop all competing at the same event.”

“It’s also terrific having our three granddaughters Leila, Macee and Makayla there to cheer everyone on, it’s a shame we can’t all be pitted together!”

Watch the Reed family in action at the Fuchs Winternationals held across the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (Thursday 5 June to Sunday 8 June 2014). 430 racers from all across the country and New Zealand are set to compete in front of approximately 30,000 spectators across the four days.
