The inaugural Summit Racing Queensland Championship kicks off this weekend at Palmyra Dragway.

Palmyra Dragway has been in operation since 1968 and while it has weathered a few cyclones over the years, the foundations of both the track and its club have stood firm and will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next year.

The first round of the Summit Racing Qld Championship is shaping up to be a ripper with 85 pre-entries, and with more expected on the day.

Modified Bike is the largest bracket with 17 entries. Peter Johnson who is the current points leader in the Palmyra track championship is looking to score well this weekend and has plans to attend all three Summit Racing Queensland Championship rounds and hopefully double-up.

Johnson said,” It’s quite refreshing to have this Queensland based Championship in our backyard. It’s been a while since we’ve had a state championship and I’d like to thank ANDRA and Summit Racing Equipment for making this happen and for their support. I’ve been racing on and off for 20 years and while they haven’t all been with drag racing, I’ve got something to chase now and having a chance at winning an ANDRA tree sure is the carrot for me. My plans are to contest all three rounds, as well as the track championship.”

Johnson’s ride is a 1986 Suzuki GSXR. “It’s one of the first made and while it’s one of three that I have, it’s also my favourite. There is not a lot of factory left in it,” said Johnson with a laugh. “What can I say, I enjoy tinkering on the bike in the shed.”

Johnson has recorded a best of 5.70 at 118 mph over the eighth and is currently sitting on 50 points in the Palmyra Race Bike track championship, and holding onto a  slim lead over Laeith Skinner.
