Regardless of the level of competition, the highest priority of ANDRA has always been a safe environment for drivers. In recent years this has included a move towards full face helmets at all levels of competition, including off-street.

During their August meetings the National Control Council considered submissions from the Australian Drag Racing Promoters Association on the impact this has had with a number of off-street participants at major city and regional venues. ANDRA Drag Racing has been proud to support the opportunities provided by their tracks for young drivers to race their cars in safe, controlled environments and it is important to balance maximum accessibility with appropriate safety at this level.

Off-street opportunities have grown significantly through the last decade, particularly where major cities have suitable venues. The positive impact of this on road safety and young drivers cannot be disputed.

Following a review of incident history, the level of activity, the availability of quality open face helmets already owned by many off-street participants, and on the market, the National Control Council has agreed to permit the use of open face helmets meeting the following criteria in registered cars at off-street events, effective immediately.

  • The event must be specifically for off-street activity.
  • The vehicle must be registered, and fitted with the factory windscreen.
  • The helmet must;
  • conform with AS1698;
    • carry a manufacture date less than ten years old (where a date of manufacture is not available the helmet will not be accepted);
    • display no visible damage or defect to the external shell;
    • be in good condition internally (foam must be flexible and not crumbling, and properly attached).
    • have a serviceable strap with no fraying or wear.
