Top Alcohol championship aspirant Wayne Newby had a race against time to have his JBS Funny Car ready for the Nitro Champs in Sydney, but amazingly was able to qualify the fresh ride into the field.

Newby and his team built up the new car in just two weeks after crashing their previous dragster at the last round of the championship in Adelaide.

While qualifying went to plan, race day was heartbreaking when the team could not fire the car for a first round confrontation against series rival Gary Phillips. A faulty ignition switch was later found to be responsible.

Newby said a lot was riding on the event but just to make it to race day was an accomplishment.

“It will still take some seat time before I am fully comfortable with the car, but it is feeling good and I am feeling confident,” he said. “It is a whole new learning curve for the team, every one of us has to make adjustments, but it is all going well and we got some fantastic data and good results so far.”
