Australian Competition Eliminator contender Al McClure is stepping out of the Altered and back into the Westernationals winning Funny Car at the Fuchs Spring Nationals as the title race comes down to the wire.

The West Aussie has been consistent all year racing under the BB/AA index but will revert to BB/FCA for the remainder of the year.

“The car will return back to the Camaro Funny Car for BB/FCA duties giving us the best chance against guns like Craig Geddes,” he said.

“A national number #1 is right at the top of my to do list and when it comes will be sweet but in the meantime we are enjoying seeing new tracks and meeting great people.”

Strong performances including a win in Perth and runner up in Sydney while setting new records in three consecutive events has given McClure 260 points to date, good enough for second place.

That was of course in the standalone Competition Eliminator bracket. At the Fuchs Spring Nationals it will be the first time he has raced in the amalgamated Super Comp category over the 1000 feet distance.

“Lets face it, Adelaide International Raceway is my second closest track at only 2900 kms. I have never raced 1000 foot or Super Comp deal so it will be challenging to say the least but very excited to give it a go.

“Our plan for the weekend is to get the 40 points to get us to 300 for the Nationals and of course set the national record. From there the car will be loaded with the kitchen sink, baby and bathwater for the Nationals where we will try to top qualify and set both ends of the record for bonus points.

“Having plans and putting them into practice is another thing but hey, we have a plan,” he laughs.

The Fuchs Spring Nationals featuring Top Fuel, Top Doorslammer, Pro Stock Motorcycle and the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship begins tomorrow from 9am at Adelaide International Raceway.
