Last week it was announced that the NT Government’s $25 million commitment for a new stadium at Warren Park is a massive boost for Territory rugby league, according to NRL NT boss Nigel Roy.
The injection was part of $85.6 million handed to sports in last week's budget.
“It’s been a number of years since rugby league has had a place to call home in the NT and we thank the government for their continued support, as was previously announced in (November) last year,” Roy said.
In addition, the $10 million announced for the construction of a new four-court indoor netball stadium in Darwin has been met with excitement by Netball NT.
Executive officer Shelley Haynes said it would ensure players in the Top End have a facility that matches those in other States and Territories.
Motorsport NT boss Grant Hamon smiled when asked what he thought of the $13.1 million allocated for his sport.
“It’s all part of the Gunner Labor Government’s pre-election promise and we’re pleased to see it’s been honoured,’’ Hamon said.
“We think motorsport is a big contributor to the Territory economy anyway with more than 180,000 spectators attending our events on an annual basis, including a big contingent of interstate fans.
“This year is a massive one for Territory motorsport, including the V8 Supercars, Superbikes, Nitro Up North Drag Racing and the Chariots of Thunder Sprintcar Series.’’
Hamon said some works had already begun on some infrastructure works, including $1.6 million works at the Central Australian Drag Racing Association.
The $6 million allocated for design and construction of new administration facilities at Motorsport House in Hidden Valley will commence in the 2017-18 financial year.
