The Maggs Racing team has been at the forefront of Group Two drag racing in Australia for a number of years. The father and son-run team have now taken the leap into Top Alcohol and have brought with them their unconventional but brutally fast engine combination to take on the big hitters.

The new dragster will be driven by son Jason and with father Robert Maggs calling the tuning shots, the 342ci small block Chev uses a ‘D-Series PSI’ supercharger and Lenco 3 speed transmission to get the dragster down the track.

The new dragster happens to be approximately 400kgs lighter than the team’s Corvette and even though at this stage, it uses an identical mechanical package, the crew are shooting for 5-second passes.

Jason explained, “We had the car set extremely soft for testing at Calder Park a fortnight ago in order to achieve the upgraded License for the East Coast Nationals.

“It goes without saying that the car was very different to drive as opposed to the Corvette.

“The engine sounded completely different and much louder. The vision is amazing, I haven’t been in a dragster since I raced a Junior, it’s so good to be able to see everything!” Maggs laughed.

The team’s expectations are modest when it comes to the weekend’s racing.

“Considering this is a new car, we hope to qualify for this event and break into the 5’s, everything else is a bonus.

“Once we have a handle on the car, we look forward to stepping up the engine combination to TA/D standards by increasing the capacity and the blower overdrive.

“We are happy to be in Sydney and can’t wait to go racing but we have to thank Speedflow Performance Products, Maggs Constructions, MPRINT Industries, Racer Pro Cylinder Heads, SDS Data Systems, Brad Penn Oils Australia, Motorsport Connections, Lucar Cargo Van, YBI Creative and Shaun Lynch Racing – we couldn’t have done it without you!”
