ANDRA recently issued a rulebook clarification relating to Junior Dragster ballast (effective 18th of March 2026), which has raised further questions from our membership.
Some valid questions have been asked, including the definition of removable ballast (particularly highlighted on some of the latest/modern JD cars), and what types of clamps and fixings are considered removeable, including engine clamps (for the purpose of attaching ballast onto JD cars).
ANDRA and Central Division Tech Inspectors viewed some JD cars last week to gain a better understanding of the issues, and it has been determined that further work and discussions is required.
ANDRA intends to consult with our members in the coming weeks to address some inconsistencies, with the view that the changes which will be made prior to the 1st of July 2026, well before the start of the 2026/2027 ANDRA championship season.
It is accepted that the addition and removal of ballast is a critical tool used by some JD teams to meet certain ET’s. This can be particularly relevant with slowing JD cars down by adding further ballast.
It is also accepted by ANDRA that the overall total weight for ballast, which is set at 100 pounds is accepted under the NHRA’s engineering standards, which is considered by ANDRA as “best practice”.
In an effort to address the issue in the short term to permit time for the consultation process, ANDRA has implemented a small change to the current rules and class requirements for Junior Dragsters.
‘Effective from the 31st of March 2026 the amount of removable ballast for Junior Dragsters will be increased from 25lbs (11.33kg) to 50lbs (22.67kg), with a total combined weight of all ballast (removable plus permanent) permitted on Junior Dragster cars now being 100lbs (45.35kg).’
“This is a short term solution to assist us get through the last events of the season,” said ANDRA CEO Tim McAvaney.
“Essentially we just need time to consult our members and get the ruling right for the 2026/27 season, something we cannot have completed in a matter of days.”
All weights must be securely mounted with rule wording to be released tomorrow (March 31st).
