“What a season 2020 has been,” exclaimed CQDRA President, Mike Gawley.

“No one could have predicted the twists and turns this year would throw at us, but I am proud to say that we were able to persevere to not only put together a seven round championship season, but also have a lot of fun doing it! Racers new and old got to experience the thrill of drag racing, make new friends, help out one another and reach goals never before attainable.

“I would like to send my congratulations to not only our champions, but also to all of our entrants on their efforts and dedication to the season that was. The interest in the sport of Drag Racing has grown exponentially at our regional ANDRA track, and the reputation of Benaraby Dragway being a “fun place to come race” has been thoroughly reinstated this year. Each and every one of the racers on track this year played a critical role in motivating the club to make the most of the season – despite the many challenges.

“I can’t thank our competitors, spectators, sponsors, ANDRA, our local government and community supporters and the committee members and volunteers enough for all they have done this year to help make this season a reality in the face of constantly changing conditions.

“Sponsors were very supportive all year, especially in the quiet time between April and June. New volunteers came forth to help with the numerous tasks in between and during our many race meets. Current competitors passed on their knowledge to newcomers during Come and Try Days. New members continued to sign up to support our club right into November. People came from all over Queensland to see the sport of Drag Racing thrive at our facility.

“Not only have we held seven Club Championship events, but we have also hosted a number of hugely popular Come and Try Days, the annual All Bike event and the inaugural Dobinsons King of the Strip 4×4 event. It surely has been a busy and rewarding year for all involved. These many successes will allow us to continue with dramatic improvements to the facility in the off season, which will in turn benefit everybody next year.

“While our Club Championship may now be concluded for 2020, we still have one more Come and Try day scheduled for December 12 and then it will be time to have a little break over Christmas ahead of what is sure to be another action-packed season! We look forward to seeing you all at Benaraby Dragway soon where there’s lots of racing to be done in 2021.”
