Drag racing is set for a return to Hidden Valley following a $4.6 million upgrade to the drag strip and installation of new timing display boards.

Representing the Minister for Sport Mark Arbib, Northern Territory Senator Trish Crossin said the $4.6 million upgrade fulfils a key election commitment with $3 million coming from the Gillard Government.

Warwick racer Matthew Loy is riding a wave of momentum in the Junior Dragster category currently, and is hoping to keep the ride going at Warwick Raceway this weekend.

Loy has been busy chalking up results recently on his way to competing in the Diamond T Products Junior Dragster category of the Queensland Street Car Magazine Eighth Mile Series at Warwick Raceway on May 14.

I trust that all competitors’ and their team that attended the Nitrochamps have returned home safely. We have been working since the event finished with the numbers so as to report to all concerned about the payment of the prize money.  I would like to stress that the venue is not owned by the sub Board or any person and that at all times we have taken the firm position that every obligation that the track has made a commitment on will be addressed. It has come to the attention of the board that there may be the non payment of prize money from the Nitrochamps. That is not correct. The management have been working at establishing an accurate financial position to ensure the continued operation of the venue as well as address prize money payments.

John Zappia and his Zappia Racing Team proved why they are the National Champions last weekend, when they won the most exciting Final in Top Doorslammer history at the Nitro Champs in Sydney Australia. The win was probably one of John’s best drives this season as he had to overcome a huge wheel stand, tyre shake and after using most of the track also dropped a cylinder a the 1000 foot mark and still managed to take the win.

The Porters racing team were hoping that the 2011 Nitro Champs was going to see the Porters Can Do Ford Mustang return to the strong pace that it showed during the opening event of the season – the 2010 Fuchs Lubricants Australian Nationals, however, due to further inclement weather in Sydney the team struggled to meet the targets that they had set prior to the commencement of the event.

Jim Read Racing have come away with a much wanted ANDRA gold Christmas Tree trophy for their efforts after winning Top Fuel at the 2011 Nitro Champs held over the April 29-May 1 weekend. JRR Crew Chief Bruce Read said that he and Brother Phil, and the JRR team would like to dedicate the win to their Father Jim Read who was unable to attend the event.
